In October 2026 we checked the Google listings and homepages of 221 independent manufacturers in Metro Detroit. Four in ten have no Google reviews. Two in three homepages carry no data telling search tools what the company is. Six tell search engines not to list them at all.
We run these checks for prospects one company at a time. This is the first time we ran them across a whole region and counted. No company is named here. The method, the exclusions, and the limits are at the end, so anyone can repeat the work.
The short version
| Finding | Share | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Google listing has no reviews | 40% | 88 of 221 |
| Google listing is unclaimed by the owner | 43% | 95 of 221 |
| Homepage has no structured data describing the business | 64% | 127 of 197 |
| Homepage has no tap-to-call phone link | 61% | 121 of 197 |
| Homepage has no link labeled quote or RFQ | 73% | 144 of 197 |
| Homepage footer is dated 2024 or earlier | 24% | 48 of 197 |
| Website linked from the Google listing is dead or broken | 5% | 12 of 221 |
| Homepage tells search engines not to list it | 3% | 6 of 197 |
The 221 are independent shops whose Google listing links a website. We could load and check 197 of those homepages. The method section explains the other 24.
The Google listing
A buyer who searches "CNC machining near me" or "metal stamping Macomb County" often sees the Google listing before the website.
| Google listing | Share of 221 |
|---|---|
| Unclaimed, so no one at the company controls it | 43% |
| No reviews | 40% |
| Fewer than five reviews | 80% |
| 10 or more reviews | 9% |
| One photo or none | 50% |
| Unclaimed and no reviews | 24% |
The median shop has one review. One more number sits outside the table: of 303 independent manufacturers on Google Maps in the area, 82 (27%) link no website from their listing.
An unclaimed listing still shows up in search. The owner can't fix the hours, answer a review, add photos, or correct a wrong phone number until someone at the company claims it.
The homepage
| Homepage check | Count | Share of 197 |
|---|---|---|
| No structured data naming the business | 127 | 64% |
| No search description | 75 | 38% |
| No phone number in the homepage text | 54 | 27% |
| Footer dated 2024 or earlier | 48 | 24% |
| No sitemap found | 44 | 22% |
| Title missing, or opens with "Home" | 36 | 18% |
| Doesn't resize on a phone | 27 | 14% |
| No quote, RFQ, or contact link at all | 23 | 12% |
| Loads without HTTPS, so Chrome shows "Not secure" | 21 | 11% |
| The www or non-www address fails | 6 | 3% |
| Blocks search engines | 6 | 3% |
Structured data is a short block of code, invisible on the page, that states the company's name, address, phone, and what it does. Google reads it, and AI search tools can read it too when they decide which supplier to name in an answer. Two in three shops have none.
Google shows the page title as the blue headline in search results. Eight homepages have no title, and 28 more open with "Home" or a template placeholder. For those shops, the first word a buyer reads in the results says nothing about what they make.
A footer year is the quickest signal a buyer has that a site is looked after. Of the 48 dated footers, 31 read 2020 or earlier, and the oldest reads 2003.
Most shops (121 of 197) link a contact page but nothing labeled quote or RFQ. A buyer with a drawing in hand looks for those words. On phones, 67 homepages show a number that can't be tapped to call, and 54 show no number in the page text at all.
Six sites ask Google to stay away, and 12 links go nowhere
Four homepages carry a "noindex" tag, which tells Google not to list the page. Two more have a robots.txt file that blocks every search engine. The setting usually gets left on by accident after a site rebuild. We confirmed all six by hand.
Of the 221 websites linked from Google listings, 12 are broken:
| What the buyer gets | Count |
|---|---|
| The domain no longer exists | 6 |
| An expired or unconnected Wix or Squarespace page | 2 |
| An error page instead of a homepage | 3 |
| A redirect to an unrelated website | 1 |
Each of those listings still sends buyers to the address, and each of those clicks ends there.
Claimed listings travel with better websites
Shops with a claimed Google listing passed 8.0 of the 11 homepage checks on average. Shops with an unclaimed listing passed 6.7. Their median review counts are two and zero. We read that as attention: a company where someone owns the online presence tends to look after all of it. The data shows the pattern, and it can't prove the cause.
What a shop can fix this month without hiring anyone
- Claim the Google listing at business.google.com, then add 10 photos of the floor, the machines, and finished parts.
- Ask five customers for a review. One email to buyers you already know moves a listing from zero to five.
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt, and search the homepage source for "noindex." If either one blocks search engines, ask whoever built the site to remove it.
- Type the address both ways on a phone, with and without www. Both should open the site.
- Update the footer year, and change the homepage title to say what the shop makes and where.
- Add a "Request a Quote" link to the menu, even if it opens the same contact form.
Our free website check runs 11 of these tests on any homepage in about 10 seconds. The Google listing, reviews, rankings, and AI-search answers need paid data, so they sit in our $297 Website & Growth Audit.
How we did it
- Sample. On October 13, 2026, we pulled 500 Google Maps listings in six manufacturing categories (manufacturer, machine shop, machining manufacturer, tool manufacturer, auto parts manufacturer, and machinery parts manufacturer) within 45 km (28 miles) of central Oakland County, through DataForSEO.
- Exclusions. We removed 37 listings in Ontario, 44 whose main category is a store, service, or office, and 116 plants, gates, and offices of national or global companies, whose websites a corporate team runs. That left 303 independent manufacturers, and 221 of them link a website.
- Listing data. Claimed status, reviews, and photo counts come from the same Google Maps pull.
- Homepage checks. We ran the same code as our free website check on October 13, 2026. It reads the homepage, robots.txt, and sitemap the way a search crawler does. We loaded 197 of the 221 homepages. Eight blocked automated visits and four didn't respond, so those 12 are left out of the homepage figures. The other 12 are the broken links above, each confirmed by hand.
- Limits. The check reads the homepage only. A site that builds its page with JavaScript after loading can hide details from it, as it can from some crawlers. Footer years count only when printed beside a copyright mark.
- Data. We name no companies. The anonymized dataset is available to journalists and researchers on request at leo@appliedagencyai.com.
